Types of Supporting Details
1. Examples - an instance of something.
- Used to explain the topic sentence or the main idea of the paragraph more effectively
- can be brief or elaborate.
- Used to explain general statements
- add interest, vigour and power to your writing
- help express ourselves more vividly and precisely
- introduced in the paragraph using the following transitional expressions : "for example", "for instance", "an illustration of this" and "a case in point is"
- This can be done by :
- comparing with other similar subjects
- focusing on the key differences between them and your subject
- providing examples in defining an abstract concept
- statistic involve - collection, classification, analysis, interpretation and inferences
- a statistic is something that has been decided upon objectively, can be externally verified and gives your argument authority.
5. Testimonies - an acknowledgement or authentication of a fact given by a person who has experienced or witnessed the fact.
- presented verbally or in writing
6. Research Findings - a systematic investigative process carried out to increase or revise current knowledge by discovering new facts.
- the principal outcomes of any research projects.
- normally done by a researcher or a group of researchers.
- key word used to present research findings include : study, research finding, statistics, names of the researchers involved and year of the research.
7. Observations - collecting and recording information using our senses of :
- sight, smell, touch, hearing and taste
8. Personal Experiences - the skills or knowledge gained from doing and sensing something over a period of time.
9. Historical data - past information or data.
- include information about events and people in the past.
- can be used as a basis for forecasting future data or trends.
Major and Minor Details
- Major detail - general ideas that support the main idea of a text. (include reasons, points in an argument, points of comparison or further elaboration of a main idea)
- Minor detail - specifics that illustrate or support the major details.
Facts and Opinions
- Facts are correct or true information from reliable sources - facts can be verified through experiences, research, observation or experimentation.
- Opinion are information which cannot be verified through experiences, research, observation or experimentation and cannot be proved or disproved. - based on beliefs or judgement.
